The system updates performed on regular basis by the Windows Update tool are generally a good thing, except when they force the shutdown process giving you no chances to do anything about it except save your work.

If you have Windows 10 Professional, keep reading: this is hands-down the easier and most proper way to deal with that issue. Look on the right panel and search for the option named No auto-restart with logged on users for scheduled automatic updates installations. Double-click on it, then change the radio button in the popup window that will appear from not configured to enabled and click OK.

In reply to Billion Debbarma’s post on August 28, I understand how to schedule a restart to install updates. What I’m trying to figure out is if there is a way to shut down and install updates like in windows 7. As it is now in order to force updates i have to click restart now in the windows update options, wait for the updates to be installed, and then manually shut down my computer and was hoping to be able to skip the restart phase because updates can take some time to finish.

It’s been about ten days, and figured i would reply to ask again as to whether this is gone or if I’m just not seeing it anywhere. In reply to AkennedyM’s post on August 28, As it stands right now, you can schedule a restart, but if your computer is already turned off, then nothing happens. So there is effectively no way to install updates at a time that doesn’t impact usage. If I try to install the updates before I leave work at night, I have to wait for them to install and then either interrupt the power on as described above , or wait who knows how long and then shut it back down after the updates have finished installing.

I don’t want to have to leave my computer running all night whenever there’s a Windows update, or be forced to sit by it and wait patiently so that I can turn it off after the updates have applied.

Especially considering there’s no way of knowing in advance how long a particular round of updates will take to apply. What’s the point of scheduling installs for times when you’re not likely to use your computer if you have to set alarm with yourself to make sure the PC is on and not sleeping at the appropriate time for the update?

That makes no sense at all. I understand that the “update on restart” may miss: – a few people who choose the option but then never proceed to restart their computer. In this case, prompt the user after a month has elapsed to schedule an update and “hide” “update on restart” at the same time – laptop users who wish to shut down cleanly but then Windows gets in the way with an update, wasting valuable battery life and time.

I found a solution! Just click on “Shut down” while pressing “Shift” key. It works for me. In reply to piercosta’s post on October 14, Hi, Thank you for the update and I really appreciate the effort made by you in order to fix the issue.

I think I found a way to make it install updates on shutdown permanently. It didn’t work the first few times i shut down after changing the setting, but now it seems to consistently update on shutdown.

Dear Billion After conversion from widows 7 to widows 10 , in second day i have already chosen updates and shutdown option and after that about two days its running by showing a blue message “Shutting down ” with cycling.
